Denver Mile High Chapter,
Sound of the Rockies
In late 1999, leaders of the old
Mile-Hi and Denver Tech
chapters began a series of meetings to discuss the possibility of
a "merger". A fearful word in the Barbershop
world, since mergers virtually never work. The remarkable idea
gained momentum and support until both leadership teams
felt they were ready to present their idea to their respective
chapters.
The fairly radical idea of merging the two chapters into one
large chorus under the direction of a young, untried director,
Darin Drown, was
met with overwhelming support by the members. On January 1,
2000, the new Mile High "Sound of the Rockies"
chorus was born.
Within the first year of existence, the new chapter had staged
an annual show of Broadway tunes and had scored nearly enough
points in the Rocky Mountain District (RMD) contest in Rapid City,
SD to qualify for International Competition. The
chorus missed a "wild card" invitation by FIVE points -
out of 1,800. That would change in 2001.
Sound of the Rockies again finished second at the
September 2001 RMD competition in Greeley, CO. However,
after all points were in from the other 15 district contests, the
chorus had earned the 11th highest score (out of over
200 competitors) and had qualified for a "wild card"
invitation to the 2002 International competition in Portland
OR. The chorus closed out a very successful 2001 with an
annual Christmas Show.
